Tomás de Torquemada was a Spanish Dominican friar and the infamous first Grand Inquisitor of the Spanish Inquisition. Serving under the Catholic Monarchs, King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I, his name has historically become a universal synonym for religious fanaticism, cruelty, and intolerance.

Rise to Power
Early Monastic Life: Born in 1420 in Valladolid, Spain, Torquemada entered the Dominican Order at a young age. He gained a reputation for living a strict, deeply pious, and austere ascetic lifestyle.

Royal Confessor: He became the personal confessor and influential spiritual advisor to Queen Isabella I during her childhood. This close bond positioned him perfectly to shape the crown’s future religious policies.

Appointment: In 1483, Pope Sixtus IV officially appointed Torquemada as the Grand Inquisitor, uniting the inquisitorial tribunals of Castile and Aragon under his singular authority.

Role in the Spanish Inquisition
Sistematizing Terror: Torquemada did not invent the concept of an inquisition, but he ruthlessly engineered it into a highly organized, bureaucratic machine of state control. In 1484, he published a 28-article code of instructions that standardized tribunal procedures for over three centuries.

Targeting “Conversos”: The Inquisition primary targeted conversos—Jewish and Muslim converts to Catholicism who were suspected of secretly practicing their ancestral faiths (Crypto-Judaism and Crypto-Islam).

The Tools of Conviction: Under his administration, tribunals used intense psychological intimidation, property confiscation, and physical torture (such as the rack and water torture) to extract confessions.

Key Historical Impacts
The Alhambra Decree (1492): Torquemada fiercely believed that the presence of practicing Jews would “corrupt” new Christian converts. He used his immense leverage over Ferdinand and Isabella to influence the signing of the Alhambra Decree. This edict forced the immediate conversion or brutal expulsion of tens of thousands of Jews from Spain.

The Death Toll: While modern historians conclude that earlier Protestant accounts highly exaggerated the numbers, it is widely agreed that roughly 2,000 people were burned at the stake during Torquemada’s 15-year tenure as Grand Inquisitor. Thousands more faced lifelong imprisonment, public flogging, or economic ruin.

Later Years and Legacy
As Torquemada aged, his escalating paranoia and sweeping investigations against even high-ranking Church officials led to widespread complaints. In 1494, Pope Alexander VI appointed four assistant inquisitors specifically to curb his absolute power.
