Bara-Bara and a whistle
I work in my career in television, newspaper and cruise ships industry. In cruise ships i was a photo manager. During all these years I worked with all kinds of people, some of them were decent people, some of them were crazy nut jobs, some of them were such a interesting characters like a guy called Karim .As photographer on a big ship you need to provide a specific number of photos, for daily target otherwise the manager will call you for some interview ,a not very pleasant one!
Karim was on the photo background in a studio inside art gallery on the ship. I was coming from behind so he didn’t see me coming.. he was hanging on one of this statues talking to people something like, c’man everyone lets take pictures , c’man!!!!
Karim what the heck your doing man? what is this monkey business, this is a five star hotel bro ,no Mickey Mouse company…please act like a professional ,and next time please take a shave….ok. Than he start to develop this kind of sound every time he was shooting pictures. He was like:-Bara-bara followed by a whistle!
…bara ,bara and the whistle… if you stay near him you hear a lot of bara-bara and whistles for sure. And guess what? People like it.. at some point deputy who was the right hand of hotel director call me in his office and start to tell me that he was shocked that he hear this bara-bara whistle stuff….I reply: -Yes Luigi but you know what, guest like it, YES….they come in photo gallery and they imitating this guy they do bara-bara whistling also…Luigi was hit by the hammer! They like this, why ?
I said yes, can you imagine that? He spent few seconds trying to understand how was even remotely possible. Ok, forget about it!
But the most funny thing about this bara-bara was in an Italian port terminal where we shooting embarkation… After few hours of shooting with bara-bara Karim was approached by the Direttore del terminal/terminal director saying in english with Italian accent:-Listen to me very carefully, If I hear one more time this bara-bara( making the sign for kaput to the throat) you drive me crazy ok with this bara-bara , no more bara bara do you understand me?
Karim was kind of scared so he want to stop but he cannot ..old habits die hard ,you know, he watch when the guy left and than he said with low voice bara-bara whistling!!!….He was awesome! Than the final cherry on the cake..he went to eat in buffet with the guests…another interview with deputy…Listen i saw one of your guys sitting on a chair and eating like this, he sit down and imitating what he saw in the buffet…eating with the head close to the table. I replay:-Yes ,that will be Karim, the guy with bara-bara….probably he is first generation in his family who wear shoes…he is struggling to adapt Luigi, what you want me to say…is not easy for him with the discipline, rules…you know. Luigi look at me like I speak mandarin…I said, Ok let me talk to him ok…we will help him to be more aware of his surroundings.
